Expert Review

Paris is a city of old buildings and little rooms. For years its smaller hotels relied on embellishments of Louis-whatever furniture, brocade, and chintz to distract from the fact that the bathrooms happened to be down the hall. A few boutique hotels have recently embraced a decidedly avant-garde aesthetic while attempting to remedy the shortcomings of their predecessors. Owners Laurent and Charlotte Inchauspé infused Hôtel des Académies et des Arts with the artistic lifeblood that coursed through the Left Bank in its heyday, providing for a singularly Parisian experience (Modigliani kept a studio on the hotel's fifth floor). Each of the 20 rooms bears a theme such as Parisienne, Comédienne (inspired by '20s party girl Kiki de Montparnasse), Man Ray (the palette is black and white), and Ruhlmann (dedicated to the Art Deco pioneer). Throughout the hotel are wall paintings by Jérôme Mesnager – of white bodies that climb, lean, and dance – forms echoed by sculptures by Sophie de Watrigant (Charlotte's mother). The hotel’s adorable tea salon Chez Charlotte, opened in 2009, serves a selection of Palais des Thés infusions and rainbow-colored Pierre Hermé macarons. 2009 Smart Luxury Award winner
