Expert Review

Le Relais Saint-Germain is like the beautiful woman who wears an expensive necklace tucked beneath her blouse, all discreet elegance. Occupying two 17th-century buildings on Carrefour de l’Odeon, the hotel sits between Paris’s Latin Quarter and the glamorous St. Germain de Pres, amid twisting streets filled with galleries and antique shops. Le Relais shuns the grandiosity of the dowager empress hotels on the Right Bank (and charges about half the price) in favor of a casual affability that’s not easy to find in Paris. Le Relais’ historical structure recalls the city’s ancient heritage: The rambling, mazelike hallways take unexpected turns and dips, but always lead to what may be Paris’s smallest elevator.

Le Relais St. Germain is owned by bad boy chef Yves Camdeborde; indeed, the hotel sits alongside Le Comptoir, Camdeborde’s wildly popular bistro. Rooms in the hotel are richly appointed and individualized, each decorated to honor the writers who contributed to Paris’ literary life such as Balzac, Hemingway, Joyce, and Proust. L’Avant Comptoir, Camdeborde’s sliver of a tapas bar, opened next door to Le Comptoir in 2009 and has stayed permanently packed with patrons sipping wines by the glass and nibbling Basque-inspired snacks like croquettes and head-to-tail charcuterie. 2010 Smart Luxury Award winner
