Expert Review

Newly renovated as of January 2011, this 150-room resort with its distinctive slanted rooftops and striking red walls resembles something out of Asia on the outside and something out of Paris or New York on the inside. Many of the 138 rooms and suites (each with a terrace overlooking the pool, gardens, or lagoon) in the main buildings have been refreshed with “modern Polynesian” décor (the 12 overwater bungalows remain more traditionally Tahitian), featuring pale wood flooring and neutral fabrics punctuated by bursts of orange in a wall lamp and pillow and a dramatic floor-to-ceiling lighting fixture carved to look like traditional South Pacific tapa cloth. Desks are sleek, while TV cabinets catch the eye with dramatic swirl patterns. There are two restaurants, the gourmet Le Carré and the larger, open-air La Plantation (which hosts a Polynesian show every Friday night). Two bars and Tahiti’s largest sand-bottomed pool round out the amenities (there is no spa). The resort is located about 15 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from Papeete.
