Expert Review

Perched near the waterfront, this fine luxury hotel is popular with business travelers who enjoy its unfailing service and fabulous Victoria Harbour views, particularly from the opulent Michelin-starred Restaurant Petrus on the 56th floor. (There’s also a Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, Summer Palace, on the fifth floor.) The hotel is also famous as the home of the largest Chinese painting in the world, “The Great Motherland of China,” which spans 16 stories.

The spacious rooms and suites feature large windows to optimize views of the harbor, as well as of Hong Kong’s stunning skyline and hilly backdrop; the higher you stay, the more spectacular the vista becomes. In-room facilities include plasma TVs, DVD players, and personal fax machines; complimentary Wi-Fi access is available everywhere in the hotel. For relaxation, try a massage or aromatherapy treatment at the spa, or just soak up the rays at the outdoor pool and sundeck. At the end of the day, guests regularly gather for cocktails at the hotel’s smart Lobster Bar and Grill.

In late 2011, the Island Shangri-La became the first hotel in Asia to introduce a fully electric, zero-emission car to shuttle guests between the hotel and nearby districts on Hong Kong Island. The complimentary service is available on a first-come, first-served basis and donations benefit the Heep Hong Society, a charity providing professional training and education to disabled children and their families.
