Expert Review

Hong Kong’s first and most famous hotel essentially invented a standard of service that the rest of the world’s hotels are still trying to match. Where else can you find a fleet of 14 custom-made Rolls-Royce Phantoms with Wi-Fi (including one from 1934) to ferry you around town or to and from the airport? Or messages from the front desk that arrive to your room by silent fax – at a number you can even reserve two weeks in advance?

The hotel’s 300 rooms mix classic European décor with subtle Oriental influences, including a Chinese lacquered coffee table and wicker upholstered lounge chair, while its modern edge is highlighted through computerized controls for curtains, bathroom telephones that digitally minimize background noise from running water, light switches that also show the outside temperature and humidity from the hotel’s own weather station, and a special glass-faced shoe box allowing polished shoes and morning newspapers to be delivered silently and directly inside your room.

Exquisite French cuisine is served on-site and in style at Gaddis, while perfectly mixed cocktails are served at the Philippe Starck-designed Felix on the 28th floor, where you’ll find some of the city’s best views of the Hong Kong skyline (including from the men’s room urinals). Or visit Spring Moon at lunch or dinner for authentic Cantonese fare, including roasted pigeon and Peking duck and its menu of 25 selected Chinese teas, before heading to the basement-level Salon de Ning for late-night cocktails, live music, and dancing. The 12,000-square-foot ESPA has 14 treatment rooms, including two “spa within a spa” private suites. For adrenaline-junkies, the helicopter city tour from the rooftop heli-pad. Guests who upgrade to suites enjoy three hours of a chauffeured MINI Cooper Clubman each day, although it may be hard not to want the Rolls-Royces instead. 2008 Smart Luxury Award winner
