Expert Review

Opened in 2009 in the top 11 floors of the JW Marriott as the sister property to Swire Hotels’ Opposite House in Beijing, the Upper House has some of the largest rooms in the city, starting at 730 square feet. It definitely has the largest bathrooms, measuring 366 square feet, with walk-in rain showers, freestanding tubs with harbor or Hong Kong Island views, and sprawling dressing areas, all with limestone floors and walls. Each of the 117 rooms has amenities like a two-temperature wine cooler, espresso machine, 42-inch LCD TV, and complimentary Wi-Fi, snacks and refreshments, and an iPod Touch loaded with hotel and destination information. The Upper House’s so-called Sky Lounge on the 49th floor is definitely not something you’d find at an airport. With magnificent views of The Peak or Wan Chai, its central feature is a gas-lit fireplace. Other perks include a “secret garden,” with lacquered umbrellas and beanbag chairs in a secluded lawn, a fitness studio, and Gray Kunz’s Michelin-starred Café Gray Deluxe.
