Expert Review

There may be less expensive places to stay in Bali, but none more luxurious or in keeping with the island’s spirit. Designed as a walled Balinese village, perched above the winding Ayung River, river-stone walkways connect 30 enormous thatched-roof suites built of marble, coconut, and teak (over half of them with private outdoor pools, and all with sunken outdoor tubs) to hidden gardens, private courtyards, and stone-carved shrines. Wherever you look, the views are lush: emerald-green rice terraces, palms, heliconias, water lilies, and sprawling ferns, plus a 100-foot green-tiled pool just in case your suite doesn’t have its own. The difficult part will be leaving all that behind to explore Bali’s artistic community of Ubud, just 5–10 minutes away – although the resort will put a car and driver at your beck and call to make that easier. Additional resort activities include guided trekking, cycling, river rafting, cooking classes in a local home, and visits to nearby villages specializing in woodworking, stone carving, pottery, and gold- and silver-jewelry making. Not to mention a fitness center, tennis court, and spa.
