In Bali, the classic quandary is culture or beach. Consider Amankila as the high-end answer to any relationship- or vacation-spoiling dilemma.  First, use Amankila as your exceptionally comfy base for exploring the rural countryside of East Bali, past tumbling rice terraces, the ikat-cloth capital of Tenganan, the ruins of the Water Palace at Ujung, and the misty volcano Mount Agung (which destroyed the palace in 1963). Then retire to the 34 free-standing suites poised on a plumeria- and palm-studded cliff, overlooking the Lombok Strait, each with spacious outdoor terraces and king-sized canopied beds. Elevated terrazzo  walkways will take you to the resort’s restaurant, library, bar, and stunning three-tiered blue-tiled pools. Then continue farther, by foot or buggy, to Amankila’s Beach Club, nestled in a coconut grove, with its own restaurant and 135-foot pool. Prefer the ocean? From there, it’s just a few more steps to Amankila’s private black-sand shore, where you can windsurf, boogie board, kayak, swim or sail, or merely lounge in eight private thatched-roof bales, while drinks and lunch are brought to you. Selecting what you want will be the only time you have to pick and choose.
