Expert Review

This 1906 Roman landmark is set on the stylish Via Veneto next to the U.S. embassy and is still the place for diplomats and celebrities to lay their weary heads. The 281 guest rooms and 35 suites were remodeled in 2010, and the top-end Villa Cupola alone gleams with $7 million of renovations. It boasts seven terraces, a choice of 160 wines, a Bang & Olufsen surround system, hand-carved wood paneling, and original art work. If you need to ask the price, you can’t afford it. Villa Cupola is so lavish it has its own website. The “lesser” rooms and suites are also spacious  – some have suite-like sitting areas – and come complete with all the lavish furnishings and perks you'd expect from a luxury hotel: carpeting that's plush enough to sleep on, gilded Empire-style furniture, velvet-covered chairs, and Italian marble bathrooms. Infant cribs have a pint-sized version of the Westin’s famous Heavenly Bed mattress.
