Returning visitors to Venice might imagine that a hotel located less than 10 minutes from the bustling Santa Lucia train station might err a bit on the overcrowded side, with hordes of package tourists traipsing by at all hours of the day and night, but the 96-room Hotel Papadopoli maintains a grand presence away from the swarms at the edge of the verdant Papadopoli Gardens. Outfitted with traditional furnishings that evoke 18th-century opulence, the hotel seems to have worked out a few minor service kinks since transitioning from a Sofitel-brand property (it’s now part of Accor’s MGallery collection). Rooms are comfortable and spacious by Venetian standards. Splurge on a corner balcony room overlooking the Tolentini Canal, and don’t check out without imbibing at the hotel’s Café Bar, which is stocked with a library of books and libations, including the Corto Maltese (prosecco, cointreau, grenadine, and pineapple), named after the character created by Italian graphic novelist Hugo Pratt, a frequent guest.
