Dead Sea Cities and Regions

Dead Sea

Floating in the Dead Sea is easily one of the Middle East’s more memorable experiences. Embraced by Israel to one side and Jordan on the other, this inland lake contains ten times the salt levels of the Mediterranean, which not only generates incredible buoyancy, but remarkable healing properties as well; indeed, it’s oft-touted as the world’s first natural spa. Bathers tend to slather themselves in Dead Sea salt and mud right at the water’s edge, and luxurious shoreline resorts use said byproducts in their signature spa treatments. But no matter how you embrace its cures, you’ll leave here feeling utterly exfoliated, polished, and recharged. See our Dead Sea Travel Guide

Aqaba

Lounging along the Red Sea at the southern end of Jordan, the seaside town of Aqaba is blessed with remarkable panoramic sightlines onto Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia and a sun and sea reputation celebrated by Jordan’s modern King Abdullah II (who maintains a royal residence down the shore). Its location, less than 2 miles from the Israeli border, also makes it an easy day trip or overnight to or from nearby Eilat. See our Aqaba Travel Guide

Petra

There is nothing like the intricately carved red-rock city of Petra. The meticulously designed ancient structures (some date to Paleolithic times) are awe-inspiring. Spend a few days exploring the ruins. See our Petra Travel Guide

Amman

Jordan’s capital brilliantly mixes a modern urban landscape with traditional and historic landmarks – find five-star hotels and upscale dining close to downtown’s souk and ancient Roman ruins.

Salt

Jordan’s former capital is one of the country’s most picturesque cities. Architecture buffs will enjoy the city’s collection of homes built in the late Ottoman period.

Irbid

Fifty miles from Amman, this university town is Jordan’s second largest city. Although there are few tourist attractions in the city center, it’s near popular sights in north Jordan Valley.
