Expert Review

Take in the sounds and scents of the wild at this leafy camp with the Uaso Nyiro River on one side and pristine wilderness all around. This plush retreat lies in the arid region of northern Kenya, in Samburu National Reserve, which spans arid terrains, hills, shrub land, and grassland. Twenty luxurious tents, each named after a local bird, discreetly sit along the river amidst shady doum palms, acacia, and fig trees. Each of the sun-bathed tents has a private porch on the riverbank. Interiors come with en-suite bathrooms stocked with Molton Brown toiletries and complete with colonial-style wood furniture. A la carte meals are served either in the main dining room, on the river bank under a canopy of fig trees, or in the bush. Activities include game drives (look out for the “Samburu special five,” game only seen north of the equator, like the reticulated giraffe), bird walks with a resident naturalist, Champagne breakfasts, and sunset cocktails atop a nearby hill. Unwind by the swimming pool that faces the savannah or book a treatment at the small Eseriani Spa, which uses local ingredients like freshly ground coffee, fresh fruit, wild flowers, and pure essential oils.
