Expert Review

Moroccan and Swahili grandeur fuse impeccably at this opulent lodge in Westgate Community Conservancy. The rugged wilderness of Kenya’s northern frontier, with wildlife-rich Samburu National Reserve just to the southeast, is paired with five-star trimmings at Sasaab. Perched hillside, the solar-powered lodge offers dazzling views of Ewaso Nyiro River. The nine split-level rooms feature a spectrum of rich appointments, such as Egyptian cotton sheets on four-poster beds and private verandahs with river-facing plunge pools. Souk-style cushions grace the public areas as do stellar views of the bush and wildlife from every vantage point. Activities include cultural visits to nearby Samburu villages and spotting the ‘Samburu special five’ on the game drives – the endangered Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, gerenuk, and Somali ostrich. Guests can also choose a combo of camel riding and nature walking along dry riverbeds and across the surrounding hills – something not doable in a game reserve, where only vehicle tours are allowed. Back at the lodge, unwind at Spasaab with its wrap-around plunge pool. Wind down with a massage or body scrub with an assortment of local ingredients like Kenyan coffee, herbs, and salt.
