Expert Review

Unrivalled vistas of Africa’s highest mountain are the top drawing card of this deluxe eco hideaway at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Named after the flat-topped umbrella thorn tree, the acacia tortilis, the upscale tented camp lies within a private 30,000-acre game concession on the edge of Amboseli National Park. Plenty of elephant sightings are guaranteed, with a multitude of herds roaming around these flat grasslands and swamps. Each of the 17 spacious makuti-covered tents comes with a wooden-floored bedroom, en-suite bathroom with hot water, and a veranda offering views of snow-capped Kilimanjaro. The spacious family tent, unveiled in 2011, has two en-suite bedrooms, a seating and dining area, and a terrace. The main thatched-roofed lodge with the dining area and bar is built with local materials like lava and sand chips. The camp purifies and bottles its own water and serves vegetables from the on-site organic garden. Guests choose from the full roster of activities, including 4x4 game drives, guided walks, sundowners, bush meals, and cultural visits to local Maasai villages. To unwind after all the action, lounge poolside or book a relaxing massage.
