Laos Itineraries

Long Weekend

Spending 3-5 days in Laos is doable as part of a regional trip that includes Thailand, Cambodia, and/or Vietnam. Fly into Luang Prabang in the north and spend 2 leisurely days exploring ancient temples and dining near the Mekong River. On day 3, take a trip downriver in a longtail boat, browse the night market for hand woven silk, and hang out in laidback cafes. On days 4 and 5, try an easygoing trek in the hills with a local tour company.

One Week

Start with 3 days in Luang Prabang before driving (rent a car or hire a driver) southeast to the mysterious Plain of Jars. Spend 1 night in the nearby town of Phonsavan. Travel further south through stunning karst mountain scenery and spend 1 night in Vientiane. Fly south to Pakse for 2 days and take in Wat Phu, just outside Champasak.

Two Weeks

Travel down the Mekong by boat for 1 or 2 days and then spend 5 leisurely days in the historic town of Luang Prabang. Head to Vientiane for 3 nights, and then on to Savannakhet for 2 nights. Go further south to Pakse and then to Champasak near Wat Phu for 2 nights.
