Expert Review

Built in 1780 as a stopover for Franciscan monks on their way to assignments at outposts in the region, the hotel still flaunts its impressive baroque façade and an arched entryway. A historic courtyard with a pink limestone floor and gray limestone fountain doubles offers patio seating for a restaurant that serves up contemporary Mexican cuisine and a fine selection of wines. The hotel is managed by Best Western and the rooms are nothing fancy with standard furniture and simple décor. They do offer basic amenities like air-conditioning, TVs, and hair-dryers. On Friday nights there is a “fiesta” in the courtyard so be prepared for a rowdy crowd and a noisy night. Friday debauchery aside, staying here ensures a glimpse into Mexico’s historic and beautiful colonial-era architecture – and at a price that’s hard to beat.
