Expert Review

Named after a golden hibiscus-like flower that flourishes here, this private stretch of sand called Majahuitas is also home to a bucolic, solar-powered resort made up of eight enchanting, thatched-roof casitas. The 18-acre oasis, only accessible by boat, is a primitive-style enclave (there are no phones, Internet access, or – gasp – electrical outlets in guestrooms for hairdryers and such). Despite the lack of modern conveniences, this world-away sanctuary has beautiful open-air casitas either right on the sand or clinging to a rocky slope. The views and isolated atmosphere are nothing short of spectacular. There’s a nearby underwater canyon and a jungle upstream worth exploring. Since the sun is the major power source here, dinners are oh-so romantic – lit solely by flickering candles in a massive chandelier. Each of the eight casitas has idyllic ocean views with hammocks overlooking the water. Airy rooms are individually designed with handmade furniture and are situated far enough apart to ensure a decent amount of privacy. Delicious and hearty gourmet breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are included in nightly rates.
