Expert Review

Named for the two most popular gift items for lovers, this 17-room Mexican-operated hotel (opened November 2009) in the capital city of Yucatan state is dedicated to romance. A member of the prestigious Design Hotels group, this is Merida's first true luxury boutique hotel and no expense has been spared to make it a standout on the stately boulevard Paseo de Montejo. There's the hot pink exterior of the 19th-century Spanish colonial building, for starters. Inside, the beautiful bones of the original building – including French wooden doorways and a rough stone mamposteria wall in the inner patio – have been seamlessly integrated with the brand-new interiors to create a light-filled, tranquil experience akin to staying in a palatial hacienda. Guest rooms have open-sky sunken bathtubs, specially-made tiles to match the original flooring, and vibrant stucco walls. Don't miss the impressive restaurant Ek Chuah, with its sophisticated reinterpretation of regional dishes, and the hip rooftop bar, reached via a cedar spiral staircase, where the town's beautiful people come to sip margaritas and catch the breezes.
