While this clear-skied Scandinavian city’s suburbs comprise one of the region’s largest urban sprawls, Oslo’s center is amazingly compact for a European capital. You can walk from one side of the downtown to the other in 20 minutes, and in 25 minutes you can take a metro to lovely Holmenkollen.

Oslo Neighborhoods

City Center

Karl Johan street is shopping central, Kvadraturen is the historical and cultural heart, Vika comprises the area between the National Theatre and Town Hall, while around Rosenkrantz Gate, Tinghuset, and Stortorvet are bars, discos, jazz, and blues clubs.

Aker Brygge

A shipyard until the early 1980s, Oslo’s waterfront area of Aker Brygge is where locals head on weekends to savor fresh seafood and relax in the outdoor restaurants.

This is where you’ll find medieval Oslo – ruins of buildings and walls, parts of edifices incorporated into new developments, and the city’s medieval park, Middelalderparken.

Oslo’s hipsters hang out in groovy Grünerløkka, five minutes from the city center. Thorvald Meyers Gate and Markveien street are lined with fascinating boutiques, funky bars, design stores, and eateries.

This bustling, multicultural neighborhood is the place to head for ethnic eateries, shops stocking exotic imported goods, and stylish cafés, restaurants, and bars.

Oslo West

Oslo’s affluent locals shop the chic Hegdehaugsveien and Bogstadveien, a short walk from the Royal Palace, for exclusive clothes, and nearby in Frogner and Briskeby for stylish furniture and design products.

Bogstadveien, Bislett, and St. Hanshaugen

Popular with students attending the College of Oslo, these lively neighborhoods are home to interesting shops, vibrant cafés, fine restaurants, and dance clubs, and, in St. Hanshaugen, a sprawling park.

Museum lovers, art fans, and antique collectors should make time to browse the charming stores in this elegant area before dining at one of its many exquisite gourmet restaurants.
