Expert Review

There are easier places to reach than Nevis, and islands with better beaches or more nightlife or those big trampolines. But for us, no place represents the unspoiled, noncommercial ideal of the Caribbean better. And though the island is peppered with a wonderful assortment of guest inns, the Four Seasons is its premier property.

After sustaining damage from Hurricane Omar in 2008, this iconic resort shut down for two years to undergo extensive renovations. The newly revamped property was unveiled in late 2010, just in time to celebrate the resort's 20th birthday in February 2011. Guests will now find 196 refurbished rooms and suites, many facing photo-perfect Pinney's beach, spread out over several two-story buildings. Each room is outfitted with wood furnishings, Caribbean-patterned fabrics, and amenities like iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and L'Occitane bath products. (Insider’s tip: Forgo an ocean-view room for a mountain-view and you can save up to $200/night.)

The colonial plantation design and sugar mill ruins are impressive, and the re-done public areas include a lovely, plantation-style great house, home to the reception, wood-paneled Library Bar, Italian-influenced Neve restaurant, and lively new Coral Grill seafood spot. A serene porch leads out to the main pool (popular with families – there are two other pools on property) and breezy Cabana eatery; beyond that, a winding path takes you past the Robert Trent Jones II 18-hole golf course, tropical gardens, and the water sports areas (including snorkeling, kayaking, and boating), ending at the chic Mango open-pavilion restaurant, where the menu celebrates fresh seafood accented by West Indian flavors. A wellness center holds tennis courts, a large gym, and a beautiful indoor-outdoor spa offering treatments that use local ingredients like sand, sugar, rum, and spices. Four new luxe butler service beach cabanas (available from sunrise to sunset, for an extra fee) line the sand, while more than 40 rental villas are perched on the cliffs above. Hollywood celebs and smart travelers come for the service - from the rum-punch welcome and the toaster delivered for a just-as-you-like-it room service breakfast, to cool misting sprays and fresh fruit skewers at poolside. Best season for value: spring/summer. 2008 Smart Luxury Award winner

Great Value Alternative: The Hermitage Plantation Inn offers great views and tastefully furnished rooms and cottages.
