Expert Review

Once a sugar plantation, this charming inn was in the hands of the same family from 1790 until 1989 (the current owners have operated it since about 2004). Set away from the water and the island's main ring road, on a slight perch under Mount Pleasant, the colonial retreat overlooks the breathtaking northern coast, across fields of sugar cane to the dormant peak of Mount Liamuiga.(Note that the lush, interior spot is not within walking distance to a beach.) Twelve one-bedroom cottages are strewn among the property; though each is different, all feature a classic décor of wood plank floors, high ceilings (with fans), and Caribbean-patterned fabrics. A favorite with honeymooners, one standout suite is set inside a small, converted stone windmill, with a sitting room on the ground level and bedroom up top. A central on-site restaurant serves a West Indian lunch buffet daily, and boasts a romantic atmosphere come sundown.
