You Don’t Need a Special License to Drive One

Class A motorhomes range in length from 20 to 45 feet. The idea of operating one may sound intimidating, but the good news is that you don’t need a special license or endorsement to drive one. However, do take extra precautions if it’s your first experience: take it slow and make it a short trip; use the rig’s backup camera (if there is one, of course); and recalibrate your breaks and turns. Find more safety tips here, plus RV laws – some of which are universal – here.

Renting During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Once you pick up your RV (and every day that you’re using it), clean and disinfect hard surfaces like countertops, sinks, and toilets, as you would your own home. Vacuum and clean stains on carpets, furniture, rugs, and curtains. Don’t forget to disinfect items like doorknobs, handles, light switches, the steering wheel, and dashboard. Get more tips here.

Remember to Clean the RV After Your Trip

Recall the old days when the video rental store asked customers to rewind their VHS tapes before returning them? Same principle applies here – don’t forget to give the RV a post-trip cleaning before returning it. This includes emptying the fridge, scrubbing the bathroom, unpacking your belongings, airing it out, and washing the exterior.

How to Clean the Holding Tank

Holding tanks contain waste water and while the thought of maintaining them is gross, it’s a necessary evil – though, an easy one. There are three onboard: the fresh water one pumps water through the shower, sinks, and toilet; the grey one is for sink and shower runoff; and the black tank has whatever is flushed down the toilet. This is the one that must be emptied at a sewer-connected dumping station. Ideally, empty it as it fills and do a thorough flush before and after every camping trip. Don’t leave the RV’s sewer lever open to dump while in use; allow it to fill up over time and empty it all at once. Learn more about holding tanks here.
