Expert Review

Surrounded by a vast landscape of awe-inspiring mountains, dramatic rock formations, sienna-colored cliffs, and a glut of flora and fauna (including the Big 5), this plush safari lodge in the heart of the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve (one of the largest reserves in South Africa’s Western Cape) is a dream for eco-luxury travelers. Nine luxurious tents, seven with king-size beds and two with matching twin beds, reside in this desert oasis, each with a private deck and rim-flow plunge pool, heated floors, a freestanding bath, indoor/outdoor showers, and Internet access. The earthy colors and raw textures of the surrounding landscape inspired the tents’ interiors, which boast rustic floors covered in hand-woven mohair rugs, raw silk curtains, hand-hewn wood furniture, and walls formed from rock and canvas. Additional comforts include a business facility with Internet access, and a small relaxation spa with two treatment rooms and a steam room. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to take advantage of the lodge’s plethora of activities, such as game drives (which may feature a sneak peek of the reserve’s rare white lion population), bird watching, nature hikes, and short treks to view ancient, art sites.
