Things to do in Johannesburg

Arts on Main

Arts on Main occupies a cluster of 100-year-old warehouses surrounding a tree-filled courtyard in Johannesburg’s Central Business District. Launched in 2009, the complex contains commercial, residential, and retail spaces, including the atelier of William Kentridge, one of South Africa’s most celebrated artists, as well as photographer Mikhael Subotzky; the Seippel Gallery; Canteen Café; and Black Coffee, an internationally acclaimed South African fashion label. Several noted galleries, ultratrendy South African fashion labels, and the Nirox Foundation, an artists’ residence program that stages exhibitions, have also set up shop. On a balmy January afternoon, the courtyard is the perfect place to sip an iced coffee – an urban oasis where a visitor wouldn’t have likely set foot 10 years ago. 2010 Smart Luxury Award winner
