Expert Review

Radisson Blu, run by Rezidor Hotel Group separately from the familiar Radisson division in the United States, has succeeded unusually well at creating upscale hotels in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa that are both distinctive and affordable. Many occupy an iconic location (near the Prado in Madrid, across from Museum Island in Berlin, on the beach in Cape Town). Most inhabit historic buildings or new structures built to meld into their surroundings. Details like the Radisson Blue Dubrovnik’s façade of locally mined stone, and the elevator at the Le Dokhan’s Hotel in Paris’s Trocadero, crafted from a vintage Louis Vuitton trunk, project a distinct sense of place. Even the airport hotels receive high-design treatment: The Zurich airport Blu was designed by Italian avant-garde architect Matteo Thun and features a 52-foot wine tower. The first Radisson Blu (formerly known as SAS) was designed by groundbreaking Danish architect Arne Jacobsen 50 years ago in Copenhagen, and today, every Blu includes some kind of homage to his work (look for his Egg and Swan chairs).

Radisson Blu stays faithful to its design-savvy past at this Madrid property, where massive black-and-white photos of the cityscape are splashed onto walls as murals and chainmail art installations speckled with white bulbs brighten the sparse, dark lobby. The hotel’s 54 rooms, each designed by Spanish interior design duo Sandra Tarruella and Isabel Lopez, come in standard, business class, and suite layouts; expect free coffee, hot chocolate, and tea in each of the rooms, as well as business-friendly amenities like free Wi-Fi and ample outlets. The daily breakfast spread – included in the cost of business class rooms, about $20 otherwise – is worth at least one wake-up call for its fine sampling of Spanish cheeses, breads, and meats, including the country’s prized jamon iberico (Iberian ham). 2010 Smart Luxury Award winner
