Sri Lanka Itineraries

Long Weekend

Tour the Cultural Triangle – hire a driver to take you from the airport near Colombo to the ancient cities. Spend the first night in Anuradhapura and the second and third at the Heritance Kandalama hotel, which you can use as a base for day trips to Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya rock fortress, and Dambulla temple. On the return trip to the airport, visit the elephant orphanage at Pinnawela. Alternatively, you can replace Anuradhapura with a night in Kandy on the first or the last day. Add a day in Colombo and perhaps a night at a nearby beach hotel in Bentota, a two-hour drive away.

One Week

Start with two days in Colombo, using the first to get over jetlag and the second to take a city tour and shop for souvenirs. Spend the next two or three nights in the Cultural Triangle and Kandy. On the way out of Colombo, check out the colorful murals at the Buddhist temple in Kelaniya. Give yourself two days to tour the Cultural Triangle and one night in Kandy. Alternatively, you can include a visit to hill country with a stay on a tea estate or a night in Galle and/or a beach resort in Bentota on the southern coast.

Two Weeks

Do the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya (where you can stay on a tea estate), Colombo, Galle, and a beach resort town on the south coast such as Bentota or Unawatuna. (For a change of pace, take the train up to the hills from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya.) Spend two nights at the Yala National Park and you may spot a magnificent Sri Lankan leopard.
