The entire archipelago is contained within an area that is no more than 52 miles long and 18 miles wide, making almost everything in Zanzibar easily accessible (and easily arrange-able). Hotels are the best source of info and many have in-house tour operators.

Things to do in Zanzibar

Chumbe Island Coral Park

Southwest of Stone Town, this park is bordered by a brilliant coral reef, and hosts a wealth of birds, fish and tortoises. Visit for the day or overnight in one of the lovely eco-bungalows.

Matemwe Beach

Wide, powdery white Matemwe is our favorite of Zanizbar’s many beaches. As elsewhere on the east coast, there's no low-tide swimming, but don’t worry – most resorts have pools for whiling away the time until the water comes in.

Mnemba Atoll

Gentle currents, an exceptional reef and abundant marine life make this the archipelago's prime diving and snorkeling destination. The surrounding waters are open to all, but the island is reserved for guests of the super-exclusive Mnemba Island Lodge (www.mnemba-island.com).

Safari Blue

Zanzibar Gallery

It's easy to get lost for hours in this shop, piled high with items like carved wooden chests, baskets of spices and kikoi textiles.
