Expert Review

Offering a seamless blend of Scottish warmth and French sophistication, this newcomer is one of Edinburgh’s most desirable boutique hotels. Nestled beside the Bedlam Theatre in Old Town, the 17th-century building once housed an asylum where Scottish poet Robert Ferguson took his last breath. Today, it’s anything but institutional, featuring 47 contemporary rooms, studios, and suites, each with Egyptian-cotton sheets, plasma TV, monsoon-style shower, and selection of complimentary DVDs. During warmer months, both guests and locals can enjoy an enclosed outdoor patio (rare in these parts), which offers a cigar “bothy” (a type of hut designed for smoking), an extensive wine list, and cuisine from the wonderful Hotel du Vin Bistro. Those looking to escape the Scottish chill, however, may choose to warm up in the atmospheric Whisky Snug with a dram of the Highlands’ finest.
