Expert Review

The noted Western architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter designed this seminal lodge in 1935, and today it is one of the Grand Canyon's most iconic buildings. The stone-and-timber hotel sits near the very edge of the South Rim and its features include two restaurants, a shop selling interesting artwork and crafts, and a museum on Colter and the history of the park. Rooms are basic and rustic, and many share bathrooms; cabins are also available, some with multiple beds and all with private bath. This is not a choice for luxury but rather for proximity to park attractions and a chance to experience one of the Southwest's most historic structures.
