Expert Review

Twelve acres of lush gardens surround the 1912 Spanish Mission-style resort, nicknamed the "Pink Palace" due to its tea-rose colored edifice. The town of Beverly Hills was actually built around the landmark hotel as more of the city's elite settled here. In the 40s and 50s, Marlene Dietrich and the Rat Pack vacationed (and partied) here, and Elizabeth Taylor honeymooned at the hotel (a few times over). Many employees have 10 to 30 years under their belt and regal guests with entertaining stories of decades past. The Beverly Hills Hotel & Bungalows is more of a classic, elegant retreat for old-timers than a hotspot hideaway. There's a quiet pool area and the intimate Polo Lounge where one can imagine high-powered executives discussing movie deals over martinis. And while you can book one of the 208 classic rooms, which feature elegant canopied beds, marble bathrooms, and private patios, we recommend splurging on one of the 23 bungalows (perhaps Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn's former love nest?) for 1,800 square-feet of Tinsel Town history.
