Expert Review

Built in 1933, Santa Monica's majestic "Lady," as she was fondly dubbed by the golden-age Hollywood elite that once flocked here (and to its surreptitious speakeasy), radiates a timeless charm that has been commanding attention for more than seven decades (with just a little help from a million dollar "facelift" in 2004). It's no surprise, given the hotel's prominent palm-lined cliff top location in Santa Monica, overlooking the Pacific coastline, and its stunning Art Deco façade. The hotel's lengthy veranda is one of its most endearing elements, offering guests an agreeable setting to enjoy breakfast or lunch with panoramic ocean views. Inside, the intimate property features an airy lobby decorated in warm earth tones, with wood-carved finishes and comfortable sitting areas; there is also a small fitness area and business center. The 84 guest rooms are laid out on the top 7 floors of the 8-story property (note: only one small, antique elevator services the building). Well-appointed rooms feature full-sized desks, new carpeting, and mattresses wrapped in plush, feather comforters. Bathrooms come with vintage tiles, bathrobes, and Aveda bath products. The property's rich history will be of particular interest to those with a curiosity for Hollywood's early days, when the seaside hotel lured well-to-do guests like Carole Lombard and Clark Gable (they currently have two movie-themed honeymoon suites named after them on the top floor). The former speakeasy in the basement, once a stronghold of the Prohibition Era, hosted guest like Bugsy Siegal and Fatty Arbuckle.
