Expert Review

This lakeside lodge was built in 1924 as a rustic summer retreat for the family and celebrity friends of vaudeville star Eddie Foy. At 8,653 feet, the alpine lodge, adjacent cabins, and cross-country ski center sit on the shores of Twin Lakes. Set amidst thick forests and offering mountain views, the main lodge is warm and inviting with overstuffed sofas facing a large stone fireplace and pine-paneled walls displaying historic photos, old skis, and brass lanterns. The 11 small lodge rooms on the second and third floors offer shared or private baths, but we recommend  paying a bit extra for one of the 35 adjacent cabins which all come with kitchens and private baths, and range from rustic studios to swank three-room suites with wood-burning stoves or gas fireplaces.
