Expert Review

Hotel Healdsburg, in the town of the same name in California's Sonoma County, is the kind of place that some oenophiles wish were more common. With its preference for sleek contemporary design over lacy froufrou, and 55 rooms with hardwood floors, teak beds, glass walk-in showers, and poured concrete bathroom counters, the hotel is a change from the plethora of predictable wine-country venues - and a lot more high-tech to boot. Cool, wired rooms aside, the Healdsburg features the perks of a destination resort, but at a fraction of the cost. Its six-room spa, offering a long treatment menu using local products, has a dedicated couple's suite. The lobby bar marries rawhide footstools with a massive fireplace and is the site of free wine tastings. Perhaps best of all, the hotel is also home to Charlie Palmer's Dry Creek Kitchen - one of the finest tables this side of Napa - which, luckily for visitors, also preps the sumptuous breakfasts included in the rates. Plus, the Healdsburg is within walking distance of several great tasting rooms (at La Crema, Souverain, and Kendall Jackson wineries, among others). 2009 Smart Luxury Award winner
