Palm Beach Money-Saving Tips

Making retail therapy easier

The free Downtown Trolley loops between the CityPlace and Clematis Street shopping districts in West Palm Beach; 12-14 hours a day, seven days a week. www.westpalmbeachdda.com

Splurge on wheels

Palm Beach is a sprawling county with 38 municipalities, so a rental car is the best way to hit the numerous beaches, downtown shopping districts, and golf courses – and get off the tourist track.

See how the other half lives

Even if The Breakers is far out of your budget, it's worth forking over $15 for an inside look at Palm Beach's most famous hotel. Hour-long historical tours are offered every Tuesday at 2pm. 561-655-6611; www.thebreakers.com

Local grooves

The city of West Palm Beach hosts free concerts by the fountain in Centennial Square at the end of Clematis Street every Thursday night from 6-9:30pm. Musical choices run the gamut from rock to reggae to swing. 561-822-1515; www.clematisbynight.net

Seasonal savings

Trip-planning assistance is available year-round through the Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau, but for visits from mid-April to mid-December be sure to request their free "$1,000 savings certificates" booklet. 561-233-3000; www.palmbeachfl.com

Pack a beach picnic

On Saturday mornings, from October through April, vendors sell fresh fruits, vegetables, breads, and pastries in the downtown West Palm Beach GreenMarket (Second Street and Narcissus Ave.) as live music plays. Park free during market hours at the Banyan Street Garage. 561-822-1515; www.wpb.org/greenmarket
