Expert Review

Tucked along Michigan Avenue, this 790-room hotel is extremely close to the city's glitziest shopping (think Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Burberry) as well as the Art Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park. On the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel originally opened in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club and its 20s-era architecture remains, from the four-story lobby with its regal staircase and cast bronze ornamentation to the murals and carpets throughout. One of the hotel's two bars, Eno, is a great spot to unwind with flights of wine, chocolate and cheese, as well as Panini sandwiches on the patio in the summer. Two towers of rooms extend 26 (North Tower) or 42 (South Tower) stories and many rooms offer city or Lake Michigan views. (Or, big spenders can opt for one of the 71 suites or the ultra-luxe Presidential Suite on the 35th floor that actually spans two levels.) A multi-million dollar renovation of the South Tower, with updates to the guest rooms and public areas, was completed in April 2010. The hotel's indoor pool was once frequented by Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller. There is also a fitness center with modern amenities like a dedicated cardio room, free weights, dry sauna, and access to personal trainers and masseurs.
