Expert Review

This grand, palatial hotel from 1907 is housed in a first-generation skyscraper and has an antique collection like no other. Case in point: the largest burning gas lantern in the U.S. hangs over the hotel’s columned porch, the long lobby is ornamented with Czechoslovakian crystal chandeliers, and the beautiful hand-carved marble bathtub in the Castle Suite was a gift from Napoleon to a wealthy plantation owner. All 226 traditional Victorian rooms have views of the city, high ceilings, and 19th-century antiques. The seven extravagant suites feature themes ranging from Victorian to Oriental to the roaring ’20s. The award-winning Crystal Room restaurant serves excellent French and Creole cuisine in a ballroom setting.
