Expert Review

Rising 52 stories behind a sleek French limestone facade in Midtown Manhattan, around the corner from the chichi boutiques of Fifth Avenue, this I.M. Pei-designed landmark is a pioneer of contemporary elegance in the Big Apple. Works of 20th-century modernist masters hang thick on the walls and dramatics touches, like 12-foot-high lanterns and stained-glass lobby skylight, have withstood the test of time and strike just the right clean, modern tone without overdoing it on the trendy scale.

On premises you'll find a well-regarded restaurant serving Mediterranean-accented cuisine, 5,000 square feet of state-of-the-art workout facilities (including steam/sauna/whirlpool), and a spa offering a full panoply of services and some interesting features such as a flotation tank, "coffee blossom treatment," and "brainwave suite." A caviar-and-champagne lounge, opened in March 2009, adds to the hotel's sumptuous mien.

The 364 capacious and soundproofed rooms are appointed in soothing, woody decor, creamy hues, streamlined contemporary furnishings, and 10-foot ceilings; half of the chambers offer inspiring city or Central Park views (21 of them also boast their own private terraces). Not surprisingly, they're outfitted with the latest gadgets, mini-bar, high-speed Internet access, and more. Plus, all have marble baths that are positively spa-like, with deep-soaking tubs, glass-enclosed showers, TV, and private changing area. 2009 Smart Luxury Award winner
