Expert Review

Golden cherubim welcome guests to this historic property (dating from 1883), which heralds the tagline "Where you'll spend the night, not a fortune." Its namesake location, within coughing distance of famous sites (like Macy's, the Empire State Building, and Times Square) is a shopping and subway nexus. All 100 rooms proffer TVs, voicemail phones, and free Wi-Fi and HBO; request one of the 60 recently renovated digs (ongoing updates began in 2005 and will be complete by 2012) and you'll get the works: pillow-topped mattresses, flat-screen TVs, and decorous touches like chandeliers, polished wood floors, and marble baths (those on the second floor have especially high ceilings, as do the rooms). An updated laundry room, spacious lobby cafe area, and the hotel's own water filtration system are all added pluses for value.
