Expert Review

Opened July 2010, this 36-story, 607-room hotel is one of the largest built in New York in the past 10 years and also one of the greenest, earning a nod from Mayor Michael Bloomberg as it applies for LEED certification. The hotel’s eponymous Times Square is actually a couple of blocks from the InterContinental. A quirk in zoning laws means that buildings in the adjacent Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood are no more than seven stories (for the most part), so the upper floors of the InterContinental boast killer views of western Manhattan. Guest rooms are spacious by New York standards, with the smallest rooms starting at 350 square feet. The “green” theme continues in guestroom décor: Energy-efficient fixtures pair with furnishings inspired by nature (think sand-colored sheets). In the bathrooms, guests will find Gilchrist & Soames amenities and walk-in rain showers (some doubles have tubs instead). One of the coolest in-room amenities: touch-screen computers. These can be used to browse area information or get some work done with Microsoft Office, but note Internet usage will cost you. Celebrity chef Todd English is behind the French brasserie-style Ça Va restaurant and lounge.
