Expert Review

You'll want nothing more than to curl up with a book at this cozy yet contemporary boutique, steps from the New York Public Library on "Library Way." Each of the 60 rooms features unique artwork and a mini-library of books relating to a particular subject, chosen according to its floor's Dewey Decimal-designated category. Romantics can bed down in “Erotic Literature” and “Fairy Tales” on the Literature level or "Love" on the Philosophy floor. From "Dinosaurs" to "The Internet," "Oceanography" to "Native American Religion," there's a room for every interest. Even if you aren't a bookworm, the digs are still noteworthy: high ceilings, motion-censored minibars, and spacious granite countertops are luxurious touches (request a front-facing room for rare, uninterrupted views all the way down Madison Avenue; other units look out onto side streets). Book-laden mahogany shelves are sleekly embedded within the warm-toned walls of the sleek lobby, posh Reading Room (boasting a grand piano for guest use), and trendy top-floor Writer's Den (with working fireplace). Along with the adjacent Poetry Garden (a wraparound outdoor terrace) and greenhouse-style sitting area, the Den transforms every evening into a trendy lounge where one can sip cocktails of a literary persuasion (like The Hemingway and Pulitzer). The final word, however, is the list of freebies included in your stay: bottled water and in-room Wi-Fi; sports club passes and DVD rentals; cappuccino-fueled breakfast and nightly wine reception (to which a friend is always welcome).
