Expert Review

Formerly the home of the Lambs Club theatrical society, the 83-room Chatwal (opened August 2010) went through a lot (including a few years of delays) to retain the character of the landmark building, while infusing a fresh style and four floors on top of the original six-floor structure. The lobby-level Lambs Club restaurant, with a matching second-floor bar, sports red-leather banquettes and photos of former Lambs actors on the walls. Downstairs, the Chatwal Spa by Kashwére boasts three treatment rooms and a small lap pool. As for the guestrooms, while “luggage” doesn’t seem like a very sexy décor theme, it works – note the steamer trunk-style vanity/desk, attaché case nightstand, and the old-style-Louis-Vuitton-trunk closets. Building constraints due to the structure’s landmark status had the fortuitous consequence of creating spacious private terraces on the seventh floor. Serious spenders will want to book one of the specialty suites for even more over-the-top luxury: the Stanford White Studio, with a full library, fireplace, and red-velvet swing; the Producer’s Suite, with a 1,000-square-foot rooftop terrace from which one can watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve; or the four-bedroom penthouse Barrymore Suite (yes, that Barrymore – Drew’s grandfather was a Lamb) that combines the Producer’s Suite and another equally luxe room.
