Expert Review

The New York-meets-Miami vibe of this moderately-priced boutique (opened in July 2009) is evident in every detail of The MAve – from the attractive, young staff, to its sleek lobby design (floor-to-ceiling windows provide unabashed views of Madison Avenue, and attention-stealing red walls contrast boldly with immaculately white flooring). The hotel’s 72 rooms are fully outfitted with red faux-ostrich headboards, blonde hardwood flooring, and pillow-topped mattresses with plush Belgian duvets. Bathrooms feature bamboo tiling, and in-room safes are large enough for laptops. Colorful canvases depicting iconic New York City scenes grace the walls of each room, while the main stairwell is dressed with expansive murals reminiscent of iPod advertisements. (You know, the ones with people dancing to imaginary beats). Fitting, for a hotel whose young, vivacious staff is willing to fulfill guests’ every desire: organizing weekend bar crawls and scavenger hunts in hot downtown nabes, or providing passes to the nearby New York Sports Club (free of charge). And with a location adjacent to the quirky Gershwin and kinky Museum of Sex, you know you’re in one of the coolest ‘hoods in town.
