Expert Review

Downtown Dallas’ steady revitalization owes plenty to The Joule, a 129-room hotel that opened in 2008 in the 1920s-era Dallas National Bank Building and offers a trio of attractions for locals and tourists alike: a jaw-dropping pool, a hip lounge, and a standout restaurant. On the 10th-floor roof, a cantilevered pool that extends 8 feet beyond the edge of the building proffers dazzling downtown views (through a clear Plexiglas wall) to hotel guests who swim to the end. More cautious visitors can sip tropical cocktails at the poolside bar or head to the basement, where PM Lounge draws a chic, see-and-be-seen crowd. The on-site Charlie Palmer restaurant dishes classic-with-a-twist steakhouse fare, some of which hotel guests can also order to their rooms. The custom-designed suites and guestrooms are each bedecked with local call-outs, such as original photographs of Dallas and Fort Worth by Bram Tihany and a direct dial on each phone to the Neiman Marcus flagship store a few doors down. By summer 2012, The Joule will add a 7,500-square-foot spa, 30 more rooms, and another Charlie Palmer-branded restaurant.
