Copenhagen has all the ingredients of a fairy tale: cobbled streets, squares with flower stalls and fountains, redbrick buildings with mullioned windows, and clock towers that chime the hour. Even the Danish currency, the krone, is decorated with images of mythical creatures. But thankfully it’s not all about the past. Right now, Copenhagen is booming thanks to a revitalized design scene and some of the most thrilling dining in Europe.
This clean, laid-back city offers eclectic buildings, castles, and royal palaces coupled with pulsating nightlife.

Copenhagen’s best hotels are notable for their strong sense of design. Guests will also appreciate the Scandinavian insistence on having top-notch beds and bedding. There’s a wide range of prices, and if you choose one of the hotels located outside the heart of town you can score the best deals though, of course, that means a longer walk to the key attractions.

Thanks to a band of adventurous young chefs who share a determination to boost the appreciation of Nordic cuisine, Copenhagen has the best restaurant scene in Scandinavia. Suddenly, foods once considered humble – berries, salt cod, barley – are starring on the best menus in the city. At the other end of the culinary scale, there are also many charming cafés that are perfect for a break from shopping and sightseeing. Do note that dining out is pricey. What seems moderate to Danes may seem expensive to visitors, and the best restaurants in town – places like Noma and Formel B – will sorely bruise your credit card.
