Food trucks are a perfect option for an on-the-go lunch during a visit to Boston, whether perusing shops in Harvard Square or exploring the Freedom Trail. Don’t be fooled by the low prices: food trucks in Boston may be perfect for a student budget, but they will also satisfy the most discerning palate. There are dozens of trucks in nearly every neighborhood, so I’ve narrowed down the list to the five hot spots most beloved by locals (and by me!).

1. Roxy's Gourmet Grilled Cheese

Roxy’s became popular after appearing on Food Network’s "Great Food Truck Race," but has stayed popular thanks to inventive offerings, from-scratch ingredients, and the fact that you can add bacon to anything on the menu. These aren’t classic American cheese and white bread sandwiches. Options like my personal favorite "Green Monster Melt," which features muenster cheese, guacamole, and applewood smoked bacon, keep customers loyal.

2. The Chicken and Rice Guys

This business’s traction in the Boston food truck scene is mostly thanks to its unbelievably addicting, garlicky white sauce. Though chicken and rice is common in cities like New York, these guys are the first to bring this street food to Boston. Giant plates of chicken, lamb, or a combo are available for $6, served drowned in their white, red, and BBQ sauces. If you’re a spicy food lover, don’t forget to add a dash of their homemade hot sauce (but be warned – it’s fiery!)

3. Bon Me

First, pick a filling: options include spice-rubbed chicken, Chinese BBQ pork, or roasted soy and paprika tofu. Next, pick your base: sandwich (with pork pate, spicy mayo, and pickled veggies), rice bowl (brown or white rice), or noodle salad (soba or rice noodles with tons of toppings). Then pick your sauce: spicy peanut, toasted sesame, Vietnamese vinaigrette, or miso lime. Absolutely any combination will be delicious.

4. Lobsta Love

There are three main things that Boston-ites love above all else: their city, their Sox, and their lobster rolls. Lobsta Love serves a classic split-top roll for the lobster shack price of $16. They do it right, with big pieces of lobster mixed with homemade mayo on a well-toasted bun. "Shots" of bisque come on the side for only a dollar more. Smaller rolls on brioche or breadsticks are also great deals, and the lobster mac and cheese gets rave reviews.

5. Cookie Monstah

They describe their chunky cookies as having "just enough dough to hold the cookie together!" They stay true to their promise with the giant Belgian chocolate chips in their house special choco-chip cookies. Flavors like red velvet with white chocolate, sugared sugar, and oatmeal coconut are other standouts. They also offer homemade ice cream sandwiches: the salty dog ("totally turtle" ice cream between two salted caramel cookies) or the PB &J (peanut butter cookies with strawberry ice cream) will blow you away.
