Move over, five-star refinery, and make way for rustic comforts. Cabin rentals are becoming increasingly popular, especially with travelers who want to vacation with extended family and friends and with those who just want to get away from it all. Here are seven cabins -- from riverfront hideaways to historic properties -- that will inspire your next vacation.

Blue Deer Cabin (Catskills, NY)
Nearly 23 acres of ferns and forest border Blue Deer Cabin, a two-bedroom retreat in the Catskills of upstate New York. Hike the trails that surround the property, escape to the waterhole that’s less than five miles away, or simply relax in Adirondack rocking chairs on the porch. A playset on property with a slide and swing keeps the youngsters and the young at heart happy, too. Rates average $129 per night.

Pere Marquette Riverfront Cabin / Airbnb

Pere Marquette Riverfront Cabin (Baldwin, MI)
This Craftsmen-style cabin overlooking the Pere Marquette River is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Hike or mountain bike along the nearby Pere Marquette Rail Trail, or canoe or kayak from the river outback (a tandem kayak is available for use). From the last weekend in April through September, you can also fish for rainbow, brown, and steelhead trout. As a bonus -- or at least we're choosing to think of it as one -- the cabin has no TV or Internet. Rates are $125 per night.

The Pioneer Trading Post / HomeAway

The Pioneer Trading Post (Gatlinburg, TN)
Situated on a private, four-acre peninsula jutting into Douglas Lake, this Appalachian retreat is a 30-minute drive from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and 17 miles from Dollywood. Inside, you’ll find hand-stitched quilts in the four bedrooms, plenty of antiques, and a vintage kitchen with modern appliances. Outside, there’s a sleeping porch and a private dock. The cabin can accommodate up to 12 guests. Rates start from $278 per night.

Yellow Brick Road Log Cabin / InvitedHome

Yellow Brick Road Log Cabin (Telluride, CO)
This 1,360-square-foot cabin offers the best of both worlds. It’s located in Telluride’s Mountain Village with access to some of the area’s best skiing -- you can ski in and ski out from your doorstep -- yet far enough from the bustle of the Village to feel like a proper, remote getaway. When it's not too cold out, enjoy the private pond or listen to the babbling brook while rocking on the front porch. The cabin sleeps six and features a stone fireplace and hewn log interior. Rates range from $385 to $1,197 per night.

Outdoor Paradise / VacationRentals

Outdoor Paradise (Asheville, NC)
Just 13 minutes from downtown Asheville, this two-acre property has rolling hills and a small waterfall. Take it all in as you sip coffee from the front porch or relax in the evening by the fire pit. The log cabin sleeps six and includes a stone fireplace, wood-burning stove, and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen. In the basement, challenge family and friends to a lively game of ping-pong or simply relax. Rates average $202 per night.

Below the Falls Lodge / Airbnb

Below the Falls Lodge (Coos Bay, OR)
Located on Glenn Creek, near North Bend, this “artistic” cabin has been featured in Southern Oregon Magazine for its gorgeous interiors and use of green building materials. Highlights include an 800-year-old juniper tree spiral staircase, exposed rafters, and hanging beds in the two bedrooms. From December through February, you can fish for steelhead trout in the creek. Rates are $165 per night.

Thaddeus Stevens' Log Home / VacationRentals

Thaddeus Stevens’ Log Home (Gettysburg, PA)
This historic log home was once inhabited by Thaddeus Stevens, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee during the Civil War, and stands within view of an area Confederates occupied during the Battle of Gettysburg. We love that while the floors, walls, and beams are original, the charming, 3-bedroom abode has all the modern conveniences you could want, including air conditioning and WiFi. Rates average $189 per night.
