8 Ways to Handle a Rainy Day At Sea

by Gayle Keck

It may not be fair, but sometimes Mother Nature does have the nerve to rain on your cruise. Not to worry: There's plenty to keep you occupied if you're stuck at sea in a downpour. Here are our suggestions to keep your disposition sunny.

Lines like Disney and Carnival have indoor movie theaters on board, showing family favorites as well as first-run flicks that are in the theaters back home. Or cozy up in your cabin for a private viewing. Holland America, Windstar, and Celebrity ships have DVD libraries on board, Royal Caribbean and Princess offer movies on demand, and Silversea lets you stream movies to your tablet or phone on board (and it's complimentary).

Take Advantage of Kids' Programs

If your kids were looking forward to a full day of riding the waterslides and splashing in the pool, they will be particularly devastated when the clouds roll in. Many cruise lines offer special activities to keep children entertained (character meet-ups on Disney, Lego Experience Day on MSC Cruises, and Seuss at Sea on Carnival, for example), which are particularly useful if the pool is closed.

Head to the Spa

Appointments at the onboard spa will book up fast on sea days — even if the sun is shining. If you aren't able to get a treatment, most spas let you book a day pass so that you can take advantage of the thermal suites and sauna. Get your blood circulating in Viking Star's chilly Snow Grotto, or sweat it out in the heated ceramic loungers and saunas of Celebrity Cruises' Persian Garden. Bonus: Some spas even have indoor pools, like the hydrotherapy pool in Royal Princess and Regal Princess' Lotus Spa.

Don't Give Up on Playing in the Water

While indoor pools are typically found in spas or adults-only solariums, there are all-weather pools open to the whole family. The main pool on Carnival's Spirit-class ships has a retractable roof to ward off the elements, as does the Lido Pool on Holland America's Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. Kids age 8 and under also have access to Nemo's Reef on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. The enclosed space includes fountains, jets, and even a slide.

Actually Use the Library

Have some old-fashioned fun in the ship's library, where you can play board games and work on puzzles. Challenge your travel companions, or invite other passengers to play — you're all looking to pass the time, so why not make some new friends? This being the library, there will also be novels to peruse as well as guide books if you want to start planning future shore excursions.

Work Off That Extra Dessert

Onboard fitness centers will have treadmills, stationary bikes, circuit equipment, and weights to help combat that second (or third) trip to the buffet. Some of the best gyms at sea will also offer fun fitness classes — look for intense spin classes on Carnival Magic and high-energy Zumba classes on Royal Caribbean ships.

Many new ships also function as floating museums, with millions of dollars worth of art on board from big names like Picasso, Lichtenstein, and Warhol. Celebrity Eclipse has its own dedicated art gallery (which also hosts auctions), and if you are on Oceania Marina or Oceania Riviera, you can borrow a complimentary audio guide from the purser's desk and wander the ship while getting the inside scoop on 25 works by artists like Joan Miró and Damien Hirst.

Check the Daily Bulletin

The activity directors know that all of the passengers will be disappointed by the downpour, and lots of indoor activities are added to the daily schedule. Look for everything from dance lessons to cooking demos, trivia quizzes to wine or cocktail tastings, towel animal-folding tutorials to karaoke.
