Branch Out on Your Next Trip With a Treehouse Hotel

Want to go out on a limb for your next trip – quite literally? Then consider a treehouse hotel. This growing niche is a great option for travelers looking for a little something different – and who aren’t afraid of heights.

But these unique properties aren’t just a few 2x4s hammered together among the leaves:  Stunning architecture, infinity pools and cushy décor are all among the offerings.

Take your pick of the following properties and get ready to relive some cherished childhood memories. One stay at any of these one-of-a-kind oases in the trees, and you’ll feel like a member of a secret club, indeed.

Tree House Lodge, Límon, Costa Rica

The Basics: Nestled in the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge on the southern Caribbean coast of the country, the eco-friendly treehouse is the star of the 10-acre property. The treehouse, which is accessible by a hanging steel bridge, has two bedrooms, a kitchen and a shower all built around a huge, century-old Sangrillo tree.

Extra Adventure: Surfing enthusiasts should take advantage of the beaches near Puerto Viejo, which features the most powerful break in the country – Salsa Brava – as well as the gentler Playa Grande.  Nearby, Punta Uva beach offers snorkeling and kayaking.

Tsala Treetop Lodge, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa

The Basics: Talk about a high level of luxury. A member of the Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel group, the property is an architectural marvel, anchored with stone and glass décor and floor-to-ceiling windows, and an oasis of comfort. Connected by a series of wooden walkways, each treehouse suite features a log fireplace, private deck and infinity pool.

Extra Adventure: Head to Table Mountain for hikes that range from moderate to strenuous, rock climbing and even caving.

Out‘n’About Treesort, Takilma, Oregon

The Basics: This charming property in southwestern Oregon is almost a guaranteed trip back to your childhood, with rustic suites connected by a series of wooden suspension bridges – up to 40 feet off the ground. Each of the 18 suites has its own distinct flavor: one has a full kitchen, and another a claw foot tub (but not all have plumbing). There are no phones, but there is wireless Internet.

Extra Adventure: There’s plenty of horseback riding, white water rafting, and even classes on – what else? – tree climbing.
