An urban retreat designed to meet the demands of San Francisco's savviest travelers, Axiom Hotel arrived in the city's central Union Square early this year. We recently checked into the happening 152-room hotel to see what all the buzz is about, and here's what we found.

What's Hot: The design. It's evident that a lot of thought and care was put into the design of this sleek and spacious property, catering to the city's burgeoning tech scene. The hotel lobby is warm and inviting, with wall-to-wall bookshelves filled with canvas photos of San Francisco, classic books, and plants. Techies and tech-minded travelers will feel at home with oversized chairs near outlets and lobby desks that welcome impromptu work sessions.

Best Feature: Axiom's central location is impossible to beat. Steps away from the Powell Street station with access to four metro train lines, the hotel's Mid-Market district location puts the whole city within easy reach. Here, plenty of shopping and fine restaurants converge right outside the doors of the lobby.

The Rooms: A heavy focus on dark wood trim paired with marble bathrooms create a warm and modern feel throughout each room. We loved the comforter that features Axiom's "X" logo and were super impressed with the high-definition flat-screen TV that personally greets you to your room with a welcome sign upon entering. Techies will appreciate the excellent WiFi, Bluetooth clocks, ample supply of USB outlets, and the convenience of Apple TV. Plush comforts include a luxe cotton robe that you actually want to wear, Lather bath amenities, and the biggest bath towels we've ever seen at a hotel.

The Food: Axiom keeps a low profile with The Turn Cafe, its cafe bar that specializes in on-the-go bites, coffee, and specialty cocktails. If you're looking for a more satisfying fare, opt for their noteworthy Axiom Burger.

Who Will Love It: Travelers looking to make the most out of their time in San Francisco will revel in the hotel's central location and sleek, tech-forward amenities. Check out the hotel lobby's second floor for an arcade-style setup featuring a foosball table, classic arcade games, and complimentary coffee and tea.

Who Might Not: Kids. Axiom's upscale look and feel gives off an industrial-chic atmosphere that doesn't completely translate to the family market. And the arcade games and foosball are more akin to the distractions found at a tech startup office then a children's play area.

Nearby: Across the street from the city's top shopping destination, high-end stores, and top restaurants are a main draw at Westfield San Francisco Centre. Directly in front of the hotel is the Powell cable car turnaround where crowds gather to ride the historic attraction.

Rates, Deals, and Special Offers: This fall, nightly rates are priced from $159. You can find a few year-round offers on their website, including a breakfast option and a shopping weekend package.

Connect: Like on Facebook, and follow on Twitter and Instagram.

Getting There: Axiom is accessible via the Powell Street BART subway station, many buses, and the Powell Street streetcar. As for driving, Axiom offers overnight valet service.
