At the end of 2013, we chose the best budget destinations for 2014. Now, while everyone’s starting to make plans for the spring and beyond, we wanted to serve up some deals that make good on those predictions. Ready to jet?
1. Toronto: Round-trip flights from $219
Whether you're traveling for ice skating or ice wine, Air Canada virtually demolishes one of the biggest hurdles to international adventures: pricey airfare. Through this promotion (valid for travel from February 18 - June 30), it’ll cost you as little as $219 to hop fly round-trip from New York’s JFK airport to Toronto. Similar deals are also available from other U.S. cities like Boston and Chicago – just book 14 days before departure.
2. Toronto: Weekend hotel rooms from $116
Once you get to Toronto, continue to save at the Courtyard Marriott downtown – which already gets bonus points for offering complimentary wifi to guests. This “last-minute” weekend deal extends through mid-April, with rates averaging out at $116 (regular weekday rates hover in the $135-$155 range). With these savings, you won’t feel guilty indulging in some of the shopping and dining surrounding the property. A two-night minimum stay is required.
3. Downtown Las Vegas: Hotel from $30 per night with $50 slot credit
For a treat closer to home, head to downtown Las Vegas, on the upswing with shiny new entertainment centers and cultural attractions. Rates at the trendy and vibrant Downtown Grand hotel are low to begin with, but through April 30, travelers can get an additional 20 percent off on two-night stays and enjoy $50 toward slots. You’ll have to make the reservation via phone – mention the code GRDEAL – and join the MY POINTS players club to receive the slot credit. The rewards program is free to join.
4. Singapore: Accommodations 45 - 63 percent off
Some readers expressed surprise that Singapore made our budget destination list, but we think there are plenty of ways for travelers to save, even in a city with higher living costs than its neighbors. Case in point: The contemporary Link Hotel, in the newly revitalized neighborhood of Tiong Baru, offers weekend rates up to 63 percent off regular rates for stays of two nights or more. Queen-size executive rooms go for as little as $106 and spacious one-bedroom executive suites for $206. No codes or promo links necessary – simply hit the "Book Now" button in the reservations module and adjust the dates to see different rates and savings.
5. Singapore: $124+ hotels with free tour, airport lounge privileges, and more
Those who are good at planning ahead can find another sweet deal at two design-conscious Far East Hospitality properties, the Amoy Hotel and the Village Hotel Katong, which overlooks the Singapore Strait. A 15-20 percent discount might not seem like a lot, but extra perks like a free city tour and airport lounge access certainly sweeten the deal here. We found rooms for $124 at both properties for weekends in March and April. May weekend rates are $15 more.
6. Rarotonga: Luxe suites at 20 - 40 percent off
Ready to act fast for a lavish spring getaway? The spacious suites at Pacific Resort Rarotonga, a serene Cook Islands property situated among sandy beaches and manicured gardens, typically start at $512. The best deals are during shoulder season from November 2014 through March 2015, when you can get three out of seven nights are free (more than 40 percent off!), not to mention complimentary scuba lessons, beach gear access, daily breakfast, and more. Book by July 31.
7. Mexico City: Roundtrip flights for $321
An architectural renaissance and vibrant arts scene are just a few reasons we have high expectations for Mexico City this year. Even more exciting? The fact that Aeromexico offers weekly specials that jet travelers to and from various U.S. cities in the $300-$400 range. If your preferred city isn’t listed, keep checking the airlines’ promotions page for new deals.
8. Nashville: Twenty percent off a resort near the Grand Ole Opry
In budget-friendly Nashville, where music lovers can catch endless live performances at no-cover bars, Gaylord Opryland Resort is a mini-destination unto itself. Its various themed atria encompass sprawling gardens, fountains, and even a river with its own boat tours. Now through the end of March, stay two nights at 20 percent off if you book by February 28, for as low as $175
